Civil Registry Acts

The Embassy of Guatemala in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in accordance with current Guatemalan regulations, acts as the appropriate channel for the registration of acts and acts that must be recorded in the National Registry of Persons (RENAP) in Guatemala : a) births of Guatemalan children, b) marriages of Guatemalans, and c) deaths of Guatemalans. To carry out this process, it is necessary to make a prior appointment with the Consular section of the Embassy. Please consult the documentary requirements when requesting your appointment.

Requirements For Registration of Births

  • Birth Certificate Of The Minor issued in the country of birth with a legalised translation if the document is in a language other than English or Spanish.
  • The Presence Of The Two Parents With Their Identification Documents.
    • Guatemalan: Personal Identification Document (DPI) or DPI certification or valid passport.
    • Naturalised Guatemalan: DPI or DPI certification or valid passport and a copy of the naturalisation resolution.
    • Foreign: Valid passport or official document from the country of origin.
  • Birth certification of both parents
    • Guatemalan parent: recent birth certification (maximum 6 months, issued by RENAP).
    • Foreign parent: birth certification issued by the country of origin (with legal translation if it is in a language other than English or Spanish).
  • If one of the parents cannot be present on the day of the appointment, he/she must present a written authorisation legalised by a lawyer, as well as a legalised copy of the identification document: passport and DPI (if applicable).
  • If one the parents has full legal custody of the child, he/she must present the legal document (s) in order to carry out the process without the other parent’s authorisation.
  • Marriage certificate (optional, when applicable with legal translation if it is in a language other than English or Spanish).

Requirements For Registration Of Mariage

  • Certificate of marriage authenticated by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
  • Birth certification of both spouses
    • Guatemalan: Recent birth certification (maximum six months old) issued by RENAP.
    • Foreign national: Birth certificate from the country of origin (maximum one year old, and with legal translation if ti is in a language other than English or Spanish).
  • Identification documents of the spouses.
    • Guatemalan: DPI or recent birth certificate (maximum six months old) issued by RENAP or DPI certification or valid passport.
    • Foreign national: Valid passport or official document from the country of origin.

The procedure is free and has an average duration of three months.

Requirements For Death Registration

  • Death certificate authenticated by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
  • Valid birth Certificate of the defunct person.
  • DPI or DPI certification or Passport of the defunct person.
  • Identification document from the concern party:
    • Guatemalan: Valid passport or DPI.
    • Foreign national: Valid passport or official document from the country of origin.

The procedure is free and has an average duration of three months.
